“Use reference. Don’t be a slave to it.” Thanks to Art Director of Tor Books Irene Gallo and Cyril Van Der Haegen for posting this up. These are so good I had to repost. There are plenty more examples on the link. Enjoy!

Fun collection of Elvgren pin-ups with their reference shots
Saturday, April 9th, 2011
Haha, I attend Gil Elvgren's Alma mater. We've got a display case and a few record books in the library illustrating how he used his photo references. Our illustration teachers are constantly trying to get us to study his approach to using references.
What a quincidwnce, James Gurney just posted about Disney using reference video on his blog here > http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2011/04/cinderellas-live-action-reference.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FNVaYV+%28Gurney+Journey%29
Excellent post! It's always fun to compare and find the differences between the reference and the final piece in the master's work.
And for us illustrators it's not only about making our lives easier while finishing an assignment but learning a few new things in the process.
