Last Friday’s Book and Editorial Opening at the Society of Illustrators was really fantastic. Aside from the stellar show in the main gallery, the Society’s hallways and dining room are always packed with classic art from their permanent collection. Rockwell, Parrish, Cornwell and Leyendecker are all common sights. But I was really surprised to see Frank Frazetta’s ‘Conan the Destroyer’ on display! The painting, though not part of SoI’s collection, is on loan from the Frazetta Museum.
Love muddy colors. Makes me want to paint with a beer and really gaudy picture frame.
thanks for sharing!
Actually, I think this may be on loan from the current owner, not from the Frazettas (though it may be credited to the defunct museum for reasons probably best left unexplained): this is the Conan painting that sold last July for a reported $1.5 million.
My Favorite Frazetta of all time. It's a shame what happened in the end. Got my pic taken next to it with Ellie back in 05' when i visited. probably the best vacation ever!Thanx for sharing Dan-
An unexpected surprise can turn an ordinary day into something memorable. It’s the kind of thing that catches you off guard and makes you appreciate the spontaneity of life. Whether it’s a surprise gift, an unplanned visit from a friend, or a sudden opportunity, these moments often bring a mix of joy and excitement.
Its … rather small! Alwyas thought Frazetta painted only big. Lovely nonetheless.
Always been my favorite to…… by a long way. The intense, cold, deadly expression just drags me in. The absolute certainty of violent death. Quite horrible really. Especially as he also seems to be doing something that he,s used to doing on an all too regular basis. Another days work; nothing special. Frightening stuff!
nice opinion. thanks for sharing...
“Get closer Donato, closer”.
I was at a P. S. Krøyer expo last week where I, Once again, was told to step away from a painting, because Iwas standing too close. It was “Hip, hip Hurra” my favorite Krøyer painting and I enjoyed the fuck out of it.
I thought this painting was sold to a private collector for the sum of $2mil, it must have been just a rumour.
Nico–
The majority of Frazetta's paintings are modest in size and range from about 9″x12″ to around 16″x20″. He only did three fairly large paintings in his life time: two versions of “Masai Warrior” that are around 32″x48″ and “Masai Lion Hunt”, which is around 48″x36″.

See my post above: the sale was not a rumor. The painting was sold last July for $1.5M; the buyer's name has been kept private., so it is a nice surprise to see it on display at the SoI. (That Anelle: she knows everyone!) The other Conan painting that sold the year before was the cover to CONAN THE CONQUEROR and was picked up for a cool $1M by one of the members of Metallica.
$1.5 million and they put it in such precarious spot! I'll have to bring an extra big coat with me tonight to Jazz and Sketch.
BIG things come in little or at least modest packages ……….. regardless of ownership at this point, it is incredible to see one of Franks pieces where it belongs……..the Society, and that it is viewable to the public as it should be!!
Nice to see Donato enjoying the work even the Bluemoon as weel!
Exactly Paul. It's just so matter-of-fact. I'll have the wife put the kettle on while i go out in the front yard and take care of business!
Much as I dig this one, that shield always troubled me. It looks more foreshortened than the arm it's supposed to be riding on. I can read it as though the shield's been thrown frisbee-style to hit the arm just at the insertion of the deltoid.
Someone take some super close up detail shots of that puppy and post them… I wanna see what Donato's seeing!
Those works were used to develop ideas for the clash royale chino game
