French comic-book artist Jean Giraud, alias “Moebius”, best known for his gritty Wild West character “Blueberry”, has died at the age of 73 after a battle with cancer, according to his publisher.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Giraud developed his experimental side by branching out into science fiction under the “Moebius” name.
Giraud also ventured into cinema, working with director Ridley Scott on the visual effects for “Alien” and the computer-effects-driven movie “Tron”.
His death was confirmed by publishing house Dargaud on Saturday, which said the comic-book world had lost “one of its greatest masters”.
He will be missed. If anybody woke me up in the middle of the night, pointed a gun to my head and asked me right away about my three all-time favourite artists, he would most likely be one of them.
Thanks for posting this, Petar. Moebius was one of those unique artists who expanded the perimeters of the fantastic art field; he will be missed.
It didn't matter if he was working in a loose cartoony style or an extremely focused 'real' style – his work never lost that great sense of visual balance and clarity. A true master.
Thanks for posting that up.
His work had a big impact on me in college. I think I will dig up some of my old Heavy Metal and Epic magazines and look through some of his work. A great talent.
