If you’re anywhere near New York City this Wednesday, June 6th, you must stop by the Society of Illustrators Third Floor Hall of Fame Gallery for a drop-dead gorgeous show of one of America’s greatest illustrators, David Grove.
David Grove: An Illustrated Life opens with a relentless stream of the best of the best of his masterful paintings. From book cover art like Captain Blood to movie poster work like Never Cry Wolf and Something Wicked This Way Comes, this is the greatest concentration of the artist’s most powerful work in one phenomenal show.
Over sixty pieces are on display, in conjunction with the release of his book of the same name that spans David’s career from his passionate beginnings in Paris and London, to his superstar fame in San Francisco where he resides today.
The opening starts at 6:30 pm. Admission is free and open to the public. The show will hang from June 5th to August 18th.
So looking forward to this!
Finally!!!!! Too many years in coming!
Does David have any sort of web presence? Not having much like finding him…
interesting style
You people in NYC hog all the good stuff. I agree Arnie, too many years.
Unfortunately, David doesn't have much web presence. But check out the link to his book. It's reasonably priced and really gorgeous. It's a good read, too. You'll enjoy his career story….
The rich color and meticulous design of the pieces, every one, are just so stunning in the flesh. They fairly reek of class. It's the coolest show I've seen in a while. Flat out powerful.
The kind of show you could just stand and study for way too much time. That's why they put it in the Third Floor Gallery–so one could have lunch and ogle them….
I can't explain how good this show looks.
Beautiful… and now I have my reason for my yearly NYC pilgrimage (not that one needs a reason, but when an arty friend puts you up…) and maybe get to see the Pulp Art exhibition, too!
Wow, another cool show to try and get to, Thanks for the info Greg.
Side note: For anyone traveling to the IMC in Amherst, MA another show that looks good is on Howard Pyle at the Normand Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA.
Cheers,
Mike
I definitely want to see this show, but I don't see what time the reception ends. When do the doors close to the public?
Hi Ray- there isn't an official end time, it really depends on the crowd. If you are going to arrive late to the show, plan on arriving by 9:30pm to be safe!
Brilliant work….always powerful and dynamic images. There is that magical and mysterious quality in his application of medium that's magnificent
How exciting! This is not to be missed!
Just got the book a few days ago….I have looked for something that compiled his work, and finally it came. Love it!
