Illustrator, Sam Weber came to visit me at my home in Connecticut this past weekend. While he was here, we went to the Yale Museum (Where we saw some amazing works by E.A. Abbey, and Gerome), painted a bit together, and got to visit some other local artists, including my long-time mentor, Steven Stroud.

Sam also decided to interview me, which prompted a rather lengthy discussion about the pros and cons of the illustration industry and why it is that we love, and hate, it so much.

This was such a pleasure to listen to. The passion of both of you guys is very obvious and I appreciate you taking the time.
I have no grounds on which to disagree with you about fans but I will say that there are certainly some of us out there who are not artists, myself included, who are BIG, BIG fans of your work. And I believe your work is very distinctive. I always know a Dos Santos piece when I see it. I don't need to look at the book info to see if it is one of your pieces. I'm not versed in the language in a way to tell you what makes your work distinctive, but it is very much so. You aren't a poor man's Donato and as a fan of both of your work I am so glad for that distinction as you each bring something interesting to the world of SFF illustration.
It was a real pleasure to tell you in person how much I appreciate your work back in May of 2012 for the SFAL and hope you will be there again this year. And for the love of all that is holy, drop some big hints on the Fenners to get a Dos Santos art book going! 🙂
Wow! Amazing! That is the type of conversation that makes people say, ” I wish I was a fly on the wall,” and I WAS! The context was very candid as has been mentioned before. And to hear the “grit” on the comics industry is a bit disheartening considering it's usually where a budding young artist have their induction and become inspired by to create art and possibly become a comic book artist. At least that is how it was for me as a young lad. What I was really amazed by was the fact that out of most of the Artists' mentioned I knew and a few I didn't know. It was also very interesting to hear how you handle your children being on 15min time intervals. I have a little one so it was good to know how you feel on the issue. Very insightful and inspiring as always Dan. 'Preciate it a lot! Thank you sir!

A couple years back someone snapped a pic of you doing a painting demo at San Diego Comic Con, I think it was on conceptart.org, A Wolverine piece with a sentinels head off in the background, totally blew me away…
so I could only imagine how this one will turn out!

I completely agree that this was one of the best interviews yet! I especially liked when they delved into the comic book industry, how easily comic book artists let themselves be taken advantage of, and how it compares with book and editorial illustration. Being an artist who makes a meager living off of drawing sequential art for unheard of companies, it's nice to get validated concerning the downsides of working in comics.
