It's brilliant, Justin! If that doesn't make kids want to travel, I don't know what will. It's interesting to watch your value handling change as you go to colour.
Which oils are you using these days, by the way? The water-mixable? I know there was a lot of evaluation going on for a while…

Stunning work, beautiful composition and colours.
Outstanding work! Such a beautiful and magical feel to it. You have a real knack for making your painting appeal on many levels. Children will be drawn to the endearing characters & fantastic colors, while adults & illustrators can admire and learn from the technique, composition and so on. The dragon for example gives the image that edge which spells mystery & danger to kids and fans of fantasy will respond to it with a healthy 'Hell yeah!'. Nice.
No – I used normal oils for this, with only a *tiny* bit of odorless mineral spirits. The water-mixables just don't make the grade for me yet. I hope they continue to improve them though. I'd love to do away with mineral spirits altogether if possible.
A good question! I may go back at some point, and transfer this out onto a much larger canvas (like 4 x 8 foot) and paint it in color on that using this piece as my color comp. I haven't really done that sort of thing before, but I am considering trying it with this one.
