Alot of my favorite artists are on the list, nice, congratz guys!
Eeep, not this time it seems. Congratz to everyone who make it, can't wait to see the book!
Love the artwork and always looks forward to a new edition. One small request to the editors: can you please stop cramming detailed pictures in quarter-page slots yet having rather crude pictures filling up entire pages? Thanks for putting it together and thanks to all the amazing artists!
You'll probably need to be more specific with rather crude. Congratulations all.
Page 292 and 293 in Spectrum 19 for an example. There's a Matt Stewart pic on p292 that's crying out for more space. It could easily be swapped with the Jim Mahfood on the next page. The latter has been pretty much kept at its original size while the Stewart has been shrunk massively, despite having lots of detail. It's not the end of the world, but I thought it worth mentioning.
Fantastic art all round though -really inspiring.
Oh, I thought you were joking, sorry. I guess for every opinion there will be a counter though. Sorry again.
We wish it were possible to give everything a full page—or bigger—but printing costs won't allow it if the price is to remain as low as possible. So we do the best we can with the space we have. But when it comes to what gets a full page and what doesn't, it's really our call as editors/designers. We see everything full size, side-by-side and make our choices. And everyone is welcome to agree or disagree with those choices. For my part (without taking one iota away from the quality of Matt's art), I think Jim Mahfood is getting maximum impact out of a minimum of line and color: seeing the work larger allows you to appreciate the choices that were made to get to the finish. Different from Matt, certainly, but equally worthwhile. Just as there have been instances when Matt got a full page and Jim's art was smaller: again, a matter of choices…
Many thanks for the explanation Arnie. It's not a big deal and frankly I'm delighted that you try to fit so much in. It's always disappointing to buy an art book and find it filled with text with small pictures tucked away so Spectrum is always appreciated.
