I almost named this article Holding the Door, but too many Hodor jokes popped into my head.
… as it turns out the painting that I was showing in progress last month was agreeable with my intentions to finish it, so, here is the rest of that process. Though I must admit at this stage it becomes more about fine tuning things than making huge changes. Some things did change and I did end up adding an additional figure to the piece as you will see in the process. Is it really finished? I’m unsure but its common for me to sit things down for a while and live with them. Something may jump out at me at some point or I may become more convinced that I’m done.
The first noticeable change when I went back to the piece was that the triangle became distinctly red rather than the greenish color it was before. I have suspected from the beginning that that would happen and this time, it did.
This part gets kinda hard to see in the photos but I did model the shapes a bit more and in the original they became more sculptural. Usually, this seems like where I spend the most time. The back and forth between light and dark on the piece. Molding and shaping the figure into a sculpture.
I might add that about here is when I started playing with the burnt umber and black paintings that I’ve been having so much fun with lately. I started one of these before I was finished with the larger piece and quickly continued with several more as I worked.
I decided to lay some wet media acetate on the piece and add a skeletal figure quickly in dry erase on the acetate as you can see in the photo.
After I figure out the placement I painted it in, sketching with the oils directly. I enjoy things that you have to look at for a while to discern but once you see them, they become obvious. This figure felt like that to me. So much so that when I woke up the next day I glanced at it and had forgotten what I did (or maybe its an age thing).
Not long after this I added the sphere ish /eclipse ish thing on the right.
I’m not entirely sure what this piece is about yet. That’s normal. It’ll come to me eventually…or not.
Sometimes my pieces speak to me… sometimes in a whisper, other times in a shout. This one, was a dialogue, but we did reach an agreement :).
Remember. Tomorrow evening at 8pm EST the Spectrum Awards will be announced on Drawn and Drafted Crowd Cast channel. Come join us!
Another stellar piece Allen! Those umber and black paintings are really speaking to my soul. So good!! Cheers-
Great! Thanks for the insight during these 2 articles. Very helpful!
