As we continue to celebrate an amazing 10 years of Muddy Colors, they have given me the green light to make one of the past videos we have produced freely available to everyone!
In this video, Dan dos Santos and I go through some painting and analyze the way the skin was painted and then I move over to my easel to create a few little demos in oils.
The video will be available for free from October 23rd – October 26th. Also, if you leave a comment on the day’s newest post you will automatically be eligible to win a free video! People are being chosen every day through the end of October!
Enjoy!
Thanks so much Howard! Skin tones have always been a struggle for me, so this present comes in the perfect moment!

I am very much looking forward to watching this video. I’ve been working on learning how to paint in oils, and skin tones have been a mystery. It definitely depends on the surrounding area, and the lighting, and I am excited to learn more. Thank you!

Im self taught and new to painting and I’m already in love with it but skintone is an area I still struggle with, thank you so much for the opportunity to learn and improve
I would love to be considered for one of the video give aways! I always find them so informative!! Great job as always Howard!
Oh wow, fantastic!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you!
Great video!
I had heard this advice in different ways before, that colors are arbitrary or relational, but to see the incredible restraint of Bouguereau was eye-opening. This is part of what makes digital so great, you can analyze these relationships in real time, and the commentary by Dan and Howard is great. Thanks for making this video free!
Really thank you, this was a very interesting topic and very useful 🙂
This was wonderfully insightful. Thank you for making this available (and creating it)! My cat was even watching with me! (He loved the moving paintbrush of course.)
I really miss getting to do regular figure drawing and painting from life during this current times, because I very much agree… whenever I am doing it regularly, everything else I’m working on improves. I think this was a kick in the pants to drag out a mirror and get working on self portraits in lieu of a proper model.
Yay! Thanks so much MuddyColors! Thanks for the video freebie! :3 Watching Justin Gerard’s video right now!
Thank you for this wonderful demonstration on painting skin tones. I marvel at your skill and appreciate your sharing with us. I paint with acrylic, but hope I can incorporate some of your technique into my work. I went right out and bought red oxide – now anxious to try! Thank you again!
Wow! This is super helpful! Skin is always so hard for me to paint!
This is so helpful! Thank you so much!
Love it!
Very cool!
This is wonderful. Thank you both for sharing. It’s been quite a help. 🙂

Great resource! Thank you for sharing this!
First off, thank you for sharing this video. I appreciated both the color analysis of the paintings at the beginning and the color demo in the latter part of the video. Great work 👍🏽
This is really helpful, Thank You. 🙂
Thank you! I watched this one a few years back, and will be happy to watch again!
Thank you so much for this!!
Thank you for the teechings. Great blog.
Thank you so much for this!! 🙂
thanks a bunch MC!
So much great information. I paused a lot going through the video, so I could let it sink in. The fact that two people discuss/ cooperate in this video gives it a lot of extra depth. Each bring their perspective and questions and I learned a lot from that.Thank you for inspiration. I feel less scared of fleshtones now, I am going start to paint a portrait today!
Thank you so much for sharing this you have no idea how much i appreciate this, painting skin and making it look alive and soft is always difficult an this is very so helpful.
Thanks for the video, I really do appreciate it.
