Hey folks. I am Super stoked to share process video of my latest painting for Magic the Gathering, ‘Eternal Witness’. Tried some new techniques in its creation. Starting with printed out middle values with no line art or gradients. (Just the pure flats!) Using this approach I was able to ink my final drawing in one take, and then build up the values with texture and rendering with acrylic. This was especially helpful for the ‘negative’ owls. As I wanted them to read graphically, almost like they were drawn on a chalkboard. You will see what I mean!
It takes a lot of pre-planning, but this technique might be fun for those of you who fear a blank white surface! Once you establish those middle values you just have to work a few steps lighter or darker of both. And this way the middle values are set from the get-go.
Thanks for your showing this process Scott! I love how you trust the process and don’t quit at those middle stages where everything seems to be out of place, waiting for the end when a marvelous painting appears in front of our eyes!!!
