A short post regarding a recent work for author Shawn Speakman’s new novel The King-Killing Queen. Shawn had commissioned me to illustrate 9 interior narratives for this novel, and after seeing the final with the unicorn decided for a full color version to use in his Kickstarter campaign for this book.
I immediately recognized that the composition needed to be reworked, to better place a focus upon the unicorn and simplify the value hierarchy. This would provide a stronger graphic presentation to the image which would read more effectively at low resolution when used on the web.
I was also able to communicate a more intimate relationship between the two human figures, and create a moment of recognition with the unicorn.
All in all, a second pass chance at reinterpreting the scene and making for a great painting experience!
The concept of “The King-Killing Queen Unicorn” sounds incredibly intriguing and mysterious, likely symbolizing a powerful and transformative narrative. It’s fascinating to think about such unique, larger-than-life characters and their roles in stories. Just like how a bold and daring leather jacket can make a powerful statement in fashion, this figure seems to represent strength and individuality that captures attention and sparks curiosity. Looking forward to hearing more about this captivating concept!
