“Hell, Ink, and Water: The Art of Mike Mignola” opens September 19 at New York’s Philippe Labaune Gallery. This will be Mike’s first solo gallery exhibition and will feature 31 watercolors, more than 50 original Hellboy covers, some of his illustrations for Pinocchio, a variety of pencil sketches, and pages from his comics stories. Mike talked a little bit to Forbes about a few of the reasons behind the upcoming show here and for the past few weeks has been giving fans a sneak peek at some of the art that will be on display, like the samples shown below. (Portrait of Mike on the first page by Christine Beatty Mignola.)

For those unable to make the journey to see the exhibit in person, IDW will release the 96 page full-color hardcover catalog (shown above) in mid-October. It’s available for pre-order here.

And for those who may have missed it, the excellent documentary celebrating Mike’s career will be available for purchase and rent from a whole host of outlets beginning September 17. As Brian Taylor, the director of the upcoming Hellboy: The Crooked Man movie, says, “If you love Hellboy, Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is required viewing! At last, an origin story for one of comics’ greatest mavericks.” I had backed the making of the doc on Kickstarter several years ago and I concur: Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is easily one of the best films about a contemporary comics creator I’ve ever seen. Check it out when you get the chance: I think you’ll agree.
