Here’s the full image of my Magic card illustration “Restoration Angel” for Innistrad Remastered, art directed by Jameela Wahlgren. It’s 11 x 14 inches and done completely in acrylic, on a cradled Blick gessoboard (which I love for the smooth surface, compared to Ampersand’s pebbly gessoboard).
I took phone photos of this piece as I went, and I’ve combined them here to create a time lapse of the process. It was done mostly in a restricted palette of Titanium White, Transparent Red Iron Oxide, Burnt Umber, and Indanthrene Blue, plus two convenience mixtures – Old Holland Violet Gray, and Warm Gray.
Enjoy!
Beautiful work! Seeing you use such a limited palette is great, as this piece could easily have been overworked with too many and/or stronger colors. Great job!
Thank you, Nico! It was fun returning to a palette close to what I first learned to paint with.
Always a pleasure to read about your process, Winona! Beautiful piece, love the halo.
Thank you so much!
The focal point seemed to stay strong throughout the process, very interesting! I love the ribbons/clothing streaming down, almost like a water feature. Thank you for sharing, Winona!
