St. George Watercolor and Ink

Last post I showed a few drawings for the St. George Show for Gallery Nucleus.
Drawing on Bristol
For the first of the pieces I decided to paint a traditional version of the piece using the Rackham/Dulac watercolor and ink manner. I’ve always really enjoyed working in this way. William Stout recently did a great Write Up on the method. He gives a really solid and helpful overview of the process.

But because I am a glutton for punishment I decided to also paint a digital version of this piece as well. Next post I will show the digital version and go into a little of the process I use when working digital directly from pencil.
This is absolutely amazing! The watercolor of course is beautiful but I always find I love the graphite version more. I like to see the pencil strokes and lines of motion. Very inspiring!
I personally can't decide which version I love most. Doesn't really matter. Both are incredible. Thank you for that Rackham/Dulac link by W. Stout. I've been searching for it.
(SO good to see you're able to sell this Hobbit print, Justin. You've obviously worked out some of the Tolkien estate concerns??? That would make for an interesting post in the future).
The dragon there has a singularly savage expression
Yes, I would love a post about any copyright concerns or issues involved in selling prints of the Hobbit piece.
Hey guys,
Gallery Nucleus is handling all of that, but I will call them to see if I can get the details to share.

Looks like you went with the method I'd hoped you would! It looks stunning. Looking forward to seeing it touched with the digital wand…

Great piece! Nice drawing, design, rhythm and composition. I love the muted color as well.
And thanks for the shout-out!
