For the first time in years, I will be opening the studio to visitors who wish to stop by and take in the extensive collections of paintings, drawings, sketches, books, prints, and other arts on display and for sale around the studio.
Saturday February 7, 2015
12 – 6 pm
Donato Arts
397 Pacific Street
Brooklyn, NY 11217
New paintings from the 2015 George R.R. Martin A Song of Ice and Fire Calendar will be fresh back from the Society of Illustrators, including oils from my work for National Geographic, Tor Books, Magic: The Gathering, Middle-earth, Disney, and many other projects over the past few years. Scores of sketches and preliminary drawings never before exhibited at conventions or galleries will also be laid out for perusal.
Discounted prints, books and DVD’s will be available to those who make the trip.
I’ve included a few shots of works already hanging as well as a sample of the pieces to be on display throughout the four floors. As much as is shown here, it is just a teaser for what will be on exhibition!
A new monumental canvas of Beren and Luthien in the Court of Thingol and Melian, from J.R.R. Tolkien’s the Silmarillion is in progress in the studio for those who would like an early peek at a work in development. The final canvas will be 9′ x 5′.
I will be present the entire afternoon, so feel free to stop by and talk some art!
Born in 1967 and raised in Colchester, Vermont, USA, art was always a hobby for Donato as a young man, he would steal away into the basement of his parents' home to work on drawings, create his own maps for the game Dungeons & Dragons, paint figurines, read comics, and construct model tanks and dinosaurs. His love of imaginative play dominated his childhood, both indoors and out. At the age of twenty Donato enrolled in his first formal art class, the beginning of his professional training. Immediately after graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in Painting from Syracuse University in 1992, Donato moved to New York City to immerse himself in the inspired and varied art scene. Formative years in the early nineties were spent as the studio assistant to the preeminent figure painter Vincent Desiderio, and long days of study in the museums of New York. It was then that his love and appreciation of classical figurative art took hold. He continues his training even now, visiting museums regularly, learning from and sometimes copying original paintings by Rembrandt or Rubens, attending life drawing sessions with illustrator friends and constantly challenges himself within each new project. Pilgrimages to major museums are his preferred reason to travel.
Donato has released a revised hard cover compilation of his works on the theme of J.R.R. Tolkien, Middle-Earth: Journeys in Myth and Legend from Dark Horse Comics.
Seeing your studio and your artwork it's really exciting. How I wish I could visit but I live in Spain. Your artwork is so good that I wonder how come no publishing house has already published an artbook about you. And I don't mean a 24 pages softcover book, your artwork deserves a big fat artbook of at least 240 pages. Any chance of seeing such an artbook collecting your art anytime soon?
Have you seen Donato's 80 page Visions of a Modern Myth by Underwood Books? I'm also looking forward to the 240 page hard cover high quality print book!

Is there a way to buy this art?
Yes, of course John. I bought it as soon as Underwood published it but it is just an appetizer while we wait for the real thing.
