Restoration Angel Painting Process

Winona Nelson

January 13, 2025 - Here's the full image of my Magic card illustration "Restoration Angel" for Innistrad Remastered, art directed by Jameela Wahlgren. It's 11 x 14 inches and done completely in acrylic, on a cradled Blick gessoboard (which I love for the smooth surface, compared to Ampersand's pebbly gessoboard). I took phone photos of this piece as I went, and I've combined them here to create a time lapse of the process. It was done mostly in a restricted palette of Titanium White, Transparent Red Iron Oxide, Burnt Umber, and Indanthrene Blue, plus two convenience mixtures - Old Holland Violet Gray, and Warm Gray. Enjoy!
